The Apprentice - Create & Launch a Perfume

You probably watched the final episode of the Apprentice UK where the 4 finalists (divided into two teams) were tasked to design a male fragrance, a bottle, create a marketing campaign, with a TV advertisement and then present their fragrance and concept to a group of perfume industry “big boys”.

To develop a new fragrance and bring it to the market usually takes 3-6 months, so when the Apprentices were asked to do all that in just 3 days it was no wonder that the panel were impressed with their achievements. Of course there were some faux pas;  the gambling connotations of Lee & Claire’s “Roulette” fragrance and their unconvincing aroma (Spicy, Amber, Oriental, Animal); and the complex, hence uncommercial, bottle design of Alex and Helene's "Dual" and their A*Men copy fragrance, curry, candyfloss and chocolate was it?. Wow! But overall some creditable ideas that if developed might just make it into the fast paced fragrance marketplace.

So, if you were to design a fragrance for the final 4 apprentices, and the boss, what would you create?

  • Helene: Acidic, bit of a bitter under note, comes on strong but dies in the evening?
  • Alex: Sweet smelling, very young, quickly evaporates, only 24 minutes, very stylish bottle?
  • Claire: Loud, loud, in your face, loud, doesn't take no for an answer, amazing staying power, oh, and loud?
  • Lee: Bright, bold, funny, half man, half dinosaur, "that's what I’m talking about!", got to be a winner
  • Sir Alan: Singular, dominant, smooth, successful? And definitely no bloody chocolate.

With over 300 new launches a year, in this day and age perfume houses have little time to create classics like Dior's Poison or No. 5 by Channel. These days perfumes tend to be  one hit wonders; quick release, quick sales and then on to the next one! And the perfume houses have realised that they can capitalise on Celebrities either endorsing or having a design input in a new perfume or by advertising and promoting a perfume. Since the first celebrity fragrance in 2002 by Jennifer Lopez with her Glow by J-LO fragrance, the market has filled with celebrity fragrances from A-list to Z-list!
So come on Sir Alan, when will "You're Fired" make a splash?.

Our take? - we feel that the innovation in the market is “design your own” as that way it will always be around, you put your own name to it and it is essentially special to you.

We have put together a fragrance we think might suit Sir Alan. If you would like a FREE 1ml sample, drop us an email with name and address and we'll pop it in the post for you.
